What Is Lust Of The Eyes?

Before we can get more insight on what lust of the eyes is, let us look at the meaning of lust and the eyes.

Meaning of Lust

In my publication on How To Overcome Lust Of The Flesh, I gave the MEANING OF LUST as “an extravagant desire or an unrestrained feeling.”

Meaning of the Eyes

The eyes are the organs of sight. The eye is used basically to give attention to things that are visual or seeable.

What Is Lust Of The Eyes?

By linking them together, Lust of the Eyes is the extravagant or unrestrained desires of one’s sight.

When a person desires extravagantly with his or her eyes, it is lust of the eyes and can endanger one’s life.

Just as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes is usually an immoral view of a situation, and it’s neither moderate nor moderated. That’s why the scripture says,

“And if thy right eye offends thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee, for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.” (Matthew 5:29).

Literally, it’s not pulling off your eyes but putting them under control. That’s why I love the way the Message Bible puts it. It says;

“Let’s not pretend this is easier than it really is. If you want to live a morally pure life, here’s what you have to do: You have to blind your right eye the moment you catch it in a lustful leer.”

But how do you blind your eye the moment you find it luring to lust?

This leads us to How To Overcome Lust Of The Eyes, but before that, let us find out where lust of the eyes comes from.

Where Comes Lust of the Eyes?

The scripture according to the Epistles of John is very specific on this matter. It states clearly in 1st John 2:16.

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

Here we see that the lust of the eyes has nothing rightly to do with God but the world in its totality.

NOTE: Lust is of the world, so is lust of the eyes. It begins with you, in you, and from what you see around you.

“But every man is tempted when he is drawn away from his own lust and enticed.

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” (James 1:14-15).

How To Overcome Lust Of The Eyes

The eyes remain very important to every human. What we see is what we capture. What we capture forms a picture in our minds, and that picture features our future.

If you must overcome lust of the eyes, you need to know that your sight determines your state of mind.

If all you see is darkness, you will definitely manifest darkness, and if what you see is light, you will manifest light.

Here is what the scripture says:

“The light of the body is the eye; therefore, when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

Take heed therefore that the light which is in you be not darkness.” (Luke 11:34-35).

The latter paragraph of the above scriptural reference is likely good advice to take heed.

If you look up “How To Overcome Lust Of The Eyes” on search engines, you will find lots of people talking about it. Definitely, many will list out several things to do that are commendable.

In all, you should know that you cannot overcome lust in this world on your own. God is the doer of the works of the Overcomers, while we overcome by faith in God’s finished works.

In Job 31 verse 1, Job made a very important statement. He said;

“I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?”

Many of us have said that we will not do this or that, but later find ourselves working against our faithful commitments.

Peradventure Zerubbabel was such that he needed to know that it’s not about what he or we can do for ourselves, but what God is able to do for us and in us.

“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6).

Overcome Lust of the Eyes By The Spirit Of God

One gift God has given us that our endeavors cannot afford is the Holy Spirit (God’s Spirit).

Understanding His functionality will bring great relief to us from the stress of this world.

If you have the spirit of God in you, then you are more than a conqueror.

Overcome Lust of the Eyes With God’s Word

There is a written word that cannot be denied its power to effect the activities of mankind. That is God’s written word.

It may interest you to know that even our Lord Jesus Christ, as a man, was tempted by the worldly things that attract the eyes.

“Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceedingly high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee if thou wilt fall down and worship me.” (Matthew 4:8-9).

All this eye attraction of the devil was with a price, but thanks be to God that Jesus was not lured into lust. Instead, He overcame the devil through the written word of God.

“Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” (Matthew 4:10).

Jesus Christ, having lived such life as a man, assures us that we can do the same if we rely on Him as our very present help in times of need.

The devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy lives through the lust of the eyes. Therefore, as God’s people, we must willingly submit to God’s will, be led by the Holy Spirit, and be in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:16).

“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2).

Conclusion

“And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2).

The eyes connect to the mind and should be minded. Therefore, let the word of God be your watchword so you may grow in the knowledge of God’s will and live in the victory that is in Christ Jesus.
